Spring on the Farm!

By Tom & Margaret Downey

Spring has definitely arrived on Daufuskie Island and the farm is buzzing with activity. We have been blessed with the arrival of nine brand new baby goats. They are all adorable and so much fun to watch as they spend their first few weeks close to Mom.

One of the favorite goats on the farm is Snow White. She is so gentle and always greets our visitors hoping that they will scratch her ears.

Snow White was the last to deliver her babies and has a set of beautiful twins.

But Snow White’s babies are not the only set of twins on the farm. When you come to visit you might catch a glimpse of the Downey twins.

Isadora and Estrella are four years old and love to visit the farm with the grandparents. They are always willing to help with the chores in the Orchard. They love to help spread the fertilizer around the fruit trees and pick a few blueberries or wildflowers.

And when the chores are all done, they know their reward is an opportunity to visit and play with their little friends, the baby goats.

But Katie takes the prize this Spring.

She is the proud Mama shown looking through the stall keyhole at her quad of healthy kids.

It’s cuteness overload!

Farm Friends

By Tom & Margaret Downey

It’s always fun to visit the Daufuskie Island Community Farm. You never know who you might find there.

On our last visit we met two young tour guides,

Catherine Rotter and Abbi Null, who were happy to tell us all about their role assisting with the chickens.

The girls collect eggs and work with Kathy Green who cleans, candles, and packages the eggs to get them ready to distribute to volunteers.

Their enthusiasm for the farm and what they have learned about the animals was infectious. They were also prepared to tell us all about raising herbs and vegetables starting in the green house and then moving to the raised beds in the garden.

It’s great to see these young girls and other kids participating in the learning and fun down on the farm.
